Wonder full: something for the senses

Something to hear, something to see, something to smell, something to taste, something to touch, or something to know....
Something to be thankful for.

Sweet sweater dress

I finished the Sweet Sweater Dress I was making for Winter. Ravelry link

I'm undecided about this dress. I love the colours and the style is so simple. Maybe I didn't match my yarn choice with my project choice, however it fits nicely and is a great length for a girl who gets about quickly on her knees.

I'm learning something from each of these projects I embark upon. I knitted this in the round to the armholes which is quicker and means the stripe is the same on the front and back (up to the armholes) however it also means each band of colour is thinner. All things worth considering and I am glad to be learning little by little.

And all the while I am able to watch this little one go about her daily business dressed in love from her Mama. It feels good.

One busy day

Here's what we did on that one last day of our longest weekend ever.

We still had many blown eggs and the kids were keen so we did it any way. And Dada joined in too.

Pasta for the freezer, 'cause we're all out.

And that girl o' mine who just loves playing with colour kept asking 'What else can we dye?' Having seen that Amanda over at SouleMama had dyed some fabric with the same dyes she used for their eggs, off to the rag bag I went, moved the dyes to bigger bowls and set the kids up outside. Oh, how they loved it. They made great bed clothes for the dolls that night. Snuggled in their rainbows, they went happily off to sleep.

tradition and remembrance

This Easter break has ended up being five days for many of us this year. Almost a week, wow.
It's felt like a real holiday.

We finally got to hanging the eggs on Sunday morn. Along with discovering what might've bee left to surprise us.

A bit of hunting and gathering. And those not quite up to the chocolate colourful treats just did their own style of gathering.

Another batch of hot cross buns...maybe the last.

Easter Monday this year fell on ANZAC day. Yesterday we made ANZAC biscuits. Eaten straight out of the oven, warm and soft with whipped cream on top. They tasted quite like butterscotch pudding.

And another whole day to go.

Good (really good) Friday

Today we spent all together. No sleep-ins because our littl'uns aren't quite up to that yet. But that means lazy bed snuggling in the morning which is a pretty good trade-off.

I think my favourite moment was when Spring announced that she was planing to create a basket to leave out for Easter Bunny. 'Because then he won't have to carry all the eggs in his hands when he goes hopping off to all the people.' It was the most well thought out idea. How wonderful that life is so original again, and again for each and everyone of us.

These nests may have been the messiest things I've made with the kids. I made them when I was a kid and I don't recall this much mess, but then I guess, I was a kid and if I'm correct mess seems to be mostly unimportant in the scheme of everyday activities. Those little odd looking eggs? Peanut butter, sugary goodness, oh my.

Last year I made these biscuits and couldn't stop eating them. I knew they would be on the list again this year. The biscuit making is quite quick, it's the crosses that consume a lot of time (thanks Dada) and the most dangerous part of these tasties is brushing then with hot jam, ouch!
The recipe suggests apricot jam but I used what was on hand...crab-apple. So now my biscuits are blushing too.

We shared a few small baskets with loved ones.

The bed stash: hers

My Spring does love to stash.

I'm often finding little collections of precious items in various places.

Under her pillows on her bed is a favourite one. For those evenings when she's not quite ready to close her eyes, she has a veritable choice of entertainment available.

The graffitti knitting Granny did and had intended to sew on the fence before leaving, some weeks ago never made it out of this little lady's hands and snuggling position on her bed.
There's always a book or two, whatever is favourite at the moment. The sock monkey, made for her as a baby by Pompa's cousin in Canada, and Rosie the giraffe(?) from my friend in Scotland. Her ghost bed light. Not seen are the things that fall down the side; home-made domino cards, a ball that lights up in the dark. Sometimes a feather or a flower, sometimes some thing she's made or painted. Her pillow of choice (at the moment it's the dinosaur one made for her when she was very little by Dada's cousin).

I enjoy watching this collection grow, dwindle and change through the days and weeks. It's a little insight into how she sees the world, what's important to her.

Pretty maids all in a row

There has been a lack of sleep around these parts for those of the mother type of late so I'm a bit brief on the ponderings.
If a picture says a thousand words well, hopefully these will be helpful.

Back before there we shared our days with these small hands, Dada and I used to have more time for plants and we always seemed to have a cyclamen around. A trip to the nursery with our Spring girl brought one home to us again.

The raspberries continue. Oh happy day!

Sunny chesnuts and warm blackcurrant cordial for afternoon tea.

New woolen dresses and...

girls who don't feel the cold...and draw with a teapot.

We're hanging in there. More than.

What we do

When it's cooler but still so lovely to be outside we:
  • put on slightly warmer clothes, including winter baby boots. (Oh, how I chuckle when I'm putting these on little feet)
  • wear Wellys, then take them off to jump in buckets full of rain?!?
  • planting with Dada those hopeful seeds and seedlings generously given to us from dear friends
  • and, sometimes, wear pyjamas all-the-day through

Any excuse

A seasonal treat. I got called on this one. It's incredible the things that small people remember. We had been doing a cake at for each season, decorated accordingly.
Our seasonal homage has been lacking a little since our Winter babe arrived so after missing a Springtime and Summertime table, we are in full swing with Autumntime.

We simply dropped a little colour in with a little sugar and shook to make our coloured sugar. The colours are Autumnal, except somehow the red became pink, strange what happens when you have a four-year-old girl as a helper. And those other shapes are leaves, with generous lashing of sugar they kinda become like clouds: what ever you imagine them to be. That pink bunny, we called her Smudge...

I have no doubt I'll get called on the Wintertime cake.
Not that this Mama's complaining. Mmmm, mmm.
